The Substance Use Prevention/Intervention Specialist in LUK’s Residential Services provides evidence-based prevention and early intervention services to youth in a group home setting, focusing on the milieu culture and individual youth needs. This position will provide support and education to youth who have experienced parental substance abuse as well as support and education to parents throughout placement and transitions. The Substance Use Specialist develops positive social norms within the program and counters misperceptions around substance use, using current information and sound psychoeducation. This position will also train and support staff to recognize and address substance use. The Substance Use Specialist will collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team to address individual youth and milieu needs and assess progress. This position will maintain up-to-date knowledge and resources regarding local substance use services and support groups, and will make referrals as needed. This position will develop a thorough understanding of the role of substance use in trauma reactive behaviors, using this knowledge to impact the change process.
The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or closely related field, with a focus on substance use. The successful candidate will demonstrate a sound understanding of substance use in youth culture, as well as the impact of family dynamics and parental substance abuse. Experience working in a residential setting is preferred. Excellent communication and computer skills required. Valid driver’s license, reliable and safe transportation required.
This is a full-time position located in North Central Massachusetts. Work will take place within the therapeutic milieu and will include community-based travel. Work schedule must accommodate the needs of the youth/family. Bilingual/bicultural candidates are encouraged to apply.

Purpose:
The Substance Use Prevention/Intervention Specialist provides prevention and early intervention services to youth in a group home setting, focusing on the milieu culture and individual youth needs. This position will provide support and education to youth, parents, and staff throughout placement and transitions.
Responsibilities Include:
- Provide evidence-based assessment and early intervention to youth in placement as needed
- Support youth who have experienced parental substance use through assessment, psychoeducation about the effects of familial addiction, and development of protective factors
- Provide support and education to families throughout placement in preparation for and during transitions
- Provide services using group and individual interventions
- Facilitate the development of positive social norms within the milieu and counter misperceptions around substance use with current information and sound psychoeducation
- Provide training and support to staff in strategies to maintain the milieu and develop skills to recognize and address substance use
- Model responses for and teach effective responses to staff
- Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team to address individual youth and milieu needs and assess progress
- Develop knowledge of available community substance abuse services and facilitate referrals to services as needed
- Maintain a current list of local support groups
- Collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary team on assessments, treatment planning, progress reviews, and discharge planning as needed
- Develop a thorough understanding of the role of substance use in trauma reactive behaviors
- Attend and participate in weekly scheduled supervision, staff meetings, leadership meetings, and required trainings
- Participate in the Division’s on-call system
- Gain an understanding and commitment to LUK’s Mission, Vision, and Values and provide congruent services
Requirements:
Knowledge and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or closely related field with a concentration in substance use preferred
- Experience working in a residential setting preferred
- Demonstrated understanding of youth substance use
- Bilingual/bicultural candidates encouraged to apply

Job Location:
The Substance Use Prevention/Intervention Specialist will work in North Central Massachusetts with access to office space in Fitchburg. Driver’s license and reliable, safe transportation required.
Salary Range and Benefits:
Pay Range: 7D. Salary Range: $50,000 – $55,000. Salary ranges within each pay grade are based on qualifications, skills, and experience.
