Our Emergency Youth Shelter is often the first place a young person turns during a crisis. The overnight team plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment where youth can find stability, dignity, and hope.

About the Role
As an Overnight Shelter Staff member, you will help ensure the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of youth and young adults staying in our Emergency Youth Shelter during overnight hours.
You'll provide supportive supervision, respond to immediate needs, maintain a safe environment, and help create a space where young people feel respected, welcomed, and cared for. While much of the overnight shift focuses on safety and shelter operations, it is also an opportunity to build meaningful connections that can have a lasting impact on a young person's life.
Working alongside a dedicated team of professionals, you'll contribute to a coordinated system of care that supports youth experiencing homelessness, housing instability, and other life challenges.
What You'll DoCreate a Safe and Welcoming Environment
- Welcome youth into the shelter and assist with shelter admissions and overnight support.
- Conduct new participant intakes and assess immediate needs.
- Perform routine safety and wellness checks throughout the facility.
- Ensure shelter guidelines are followed while maintaining a respectful, youth-centered approach.
- Maintain clean, organized, and welcoming common spaces, sleeping areas, and restrooms.
Support Youth Through Compassionate Engagement
- Build positive, trusting relationships with youth through empathy, consistency, and respect.
- Apply principles of Positive Youth Development, Trauma-Informed Care, and Harm Reduction in daily interactions.
- Help connect youth with food, hygiene supplies, community resources, and supportive services.
- Encourage personal growth, responsibility, and independence through guidance, coaching, and positive role modeling.
- Support youth engagement with case managers and other service providers.
Respond to Crises with Care and Professionalism
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support when needed.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and safety concerns.
- Consult with supervisors and on-call staff when complex situations arise.
- Promote a shelter culture rooted in safety, respect, inclusion, and non-judgment.
Support Shelter Operations
- Complete overnight responsibilities to ensure smooth shelter operations.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs.
- Report facility maintenance and safety concerns.
- Maintain accurate shift notes, incident documentation, and communication logs.
- Participate in required training, supervision, and team meetings.

What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Additional education in social work, human services, youth development, psychology, or related fields is preferred.
- Experience working with youth, particularly youth experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or crisis situations, is highly valued.
- Understanding of Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, Positive Youth Development, and de-escalation practices preferred.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a team.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, documentation, and data entry systems.
