Cost Engineer
Location: Chelmsford, MA
Position Type: Direct Hire
Salary Range: $60,000 – $65,000 per year
Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Cost Engineer to join our team in Chelmsford, MA. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for developing comprehensive bid packages in response to customer RFQs and following through with awarded contracts to ensure cost of sales targets are met. This role is critical in preparing accurate cost and work completion estimates for routine projects by compiling itemized materials and price lists from blueprints and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Bid Management: Review new RFQ packages to assist in bid/no-bid decision-making; develop labor, Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE), and tooling requirements for each project.
- Cost Estimation: Formulate precise pricing based on developed material, labor, and NRE costs utilizing appropriate rate codes; develop Excel-based Bills of Materials (BOMs) for the purchasing department.
- Contract Oversight: Follow through with awarded contracts to ensure build efficiency is being met; adjust quotes as necessary based on real-time material costs and labor times.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal departments including Quoting, Purchasing, Engineering, Test, and Manufacturing to ensure project alignment.
- Customer Relations: Submit and follow up on proposals with customers; obtain relevant information and prepare formal documentation or letters requesting clarification on technical data.
- Continuous Improvement: Participate in Total Quality Management (TQM) initiatives during daily tasks and maintain a strict adherence to company and OSHA safety guidelines.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in Contract Manufacturing or an equivalent industrial environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in reading assembly drawings and technical data packages; technical understanding of backplanes, CCAs, cables, harnesses, and box build assembly.
- Software: High proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for BOM development and pricing models.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for internal collaboration and customer-facing proposals.
- Analytical Ability: Proven analytical skills to interpret complex customer requirements and prepare proposals that minimize cost while maximizing profit.
