Job Description

This role supports a three-month project in the greater Springfield area, retrofitting existing mechanical systems for long-standing customers. You will travel directly from home to various worksites in your own vehicle and focus on hanging and installing steel and copper piping for hot water, boiler, and refrigeration systems without any welding requirements.

Responsibilities

• Install, hang, and retrofit steel and copper piping in existing facilities for hot water, boiler, and refrigeration systems.
• Assemble and connect piping using brazing and press-fit methods rather than welding.
• Use hand tools such as pliers, wrenches, and pipe cutters to measure, cut, thread, and fit pipe accurately.
• Work with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems as part of piping and refrigeration projects.
• Interpret and follow blueprints and technical drawings to complete piping installations and retrofits correctly.
• Collaborate with other trades on-site to ensure safe, efficient, and coordinated installation work.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while adhering to all site safety procedures.
• Drive directly to assigned job sites in the greater Springfield area and arrive on time for scheduled shifts.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in pipefitting, including hanging and installing pipe in existing systems.
• Hands-on experience working with steel and copper piping.
• Ability to perform brazing and press-fit piping connections without welding.
• Proficiency using pliers, wrenches, pipe cutters, and related hand tools for cutting, threading, and fitting pipe.
• Experience working on hot water piping, boiler systems, and refrigeration piping.
• Experience with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems.
• Ability to travel independently to various job sites in the greater Springfield area.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints is a strong plus.
• Any experience with sheet metal or ductwork is highly desirable.
• General plumbing and piping installation background is beneficial.
• Familiarity with threading and fitting techniques in commercial or industrial settings.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role in the greater Springfield area, working at established customer sites rather than a central shop. The position follows a first-shift schedule, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work is hands-on and physical, involving installation and retrofitting of hot water, boiler, and refrigeration piping systems using steel and copper pipe. You will regularly use hand tools such as pliers, wrenches, pipe cutters, and equipment for brazing and press-fit connections. The environment is typical of active mechanical and construction sites, where safety practices, appropriate workwear, and awareness of surrounding trades are essential.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
