Job Title: Special Education Teacher – Mild to Moderate
Location: Rutland, Massachusetts
Student Population: Ages 6–22
Preferred Licensure Level: Grades 5–12
Employment Type: Full-Year Contract (includes summer programming)
Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher provides instruction and behavioral support to students with mild to moderate disabilities in a highly structured, restrictive educational setting. The program serves a small school population of approximately 84 students and emphasizes consistency, clinical collaboration, and individualized student support. This role is well-suited for an educator who values structure, clear expectations, and comprehensive onboarding.
Essential Responsibilities
• Provide direct instruction to students with mild to moderate special education needs in small, structured classroom settings
• Implement established Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with clinical and educational staff
• Utilize clinical tools and enhanced data collection methods beyond traditional special education documentation
• Support students who may present with behavioral challenges, including the potential for physical aggression
• Maintain consistent communication with multidisciplinary team members to support student progress and safety
• Adhere to all program policies, safety procedures, and professional standards
Curriculum
• Curriculum development is not required for this role
• Instruction is delivered using established curriculum and programming frameworks
Training and Onboarding
• Two-week comprehensive onboarding program
• Required participation in program-specific de-escalation and restraint training
• Three days of supervised shadow teaching
• First Aid and CPR certification provided
Schedule and Academic Calendar
• Full-year position, including 22 summer workdays
Preferred Qualifications
• Candidates must hold an active Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) license as a Special Education Teacher of Students with Mild to Moderate Disabilities. Licensure must be current and in hand at the time of hire; waivers are not permitted.
• Prior experience working with students ranging in ages 6–22
• Experience collaborating with clinical teams and using data-informed instructional practices
• Ability to work effectively in a restrictive, highly structured educational environment
• Physical ability to participate in program-required safety and intervention training
