Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

An educational institution in Lynn, MA is seeking a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support students with visual impairments in developing essential travel skills. Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and evaluate students orientation and mobility needs related to vision loss
  • Develop and implement individualized mobility training plans that promote safe, independent travel
  • Teach techniques using canes, electronic travel aids, and spatial awareness strategies
  • Collaborate with teachers, families, and related service providers to support students goals
  • Monitor progress and adjust instructional methods to meet diverse learning styles
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, guidelines, and best practices in orientation and mobility education

Qualifications:

  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential or eligibility preferred
  • Experience working with school-age children who have visual impairments
  • Strong knowledge of assistive technology and travel aids for visually impaired students
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to fostering student independence and confidence in mobility
