JOB SUMMARY
The Associate Claim Counsel works within the Claim Department, strengthening our performance by assisting in the handling and management of litigated and complex claims. This role provides legal analysis, coverage interpretation, and litigation advice to our claims professionals. The Associate Claim Counsel furthers company and departmental goals through collaboration, research, and technical development. This senior level management position influences outcomes by sharing experience in insurance law, overseeing claims handling, and assuring regulatory compliance.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Claim Counsel and other senior staff with legal research, coverage analysis, and litigation strategy.
- Review and analyze legal documents, pleadings, and discovery materials.
- Draft and approve coverage letters and other legal correspondence.
- Attend mediations, depositions, trials and court proceedings as an observer or company representative.
- Coordinate and participate in claim file reviews and roundtable discussions.
- Monitor litigated files on diary for timely handling and reserve adequacy.
- Support training initiatives and contribute to technical development of claim staff.
- Collaborate with outside counsel, house counsel and vendors to ensure quality and cost-effective services.
- Respond to regulatory inquiries and assist with compliance-related matters.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting for assigned files.
- Contribute to company projects and initiatives, including legal bill review, data analytics, AI, strategy and process improvement.
- Review incoming legal correspondence and direct action on important issues.
- Evaluate performance of outside counsel and ensure quality representation is provided..
- Participate in the selection and management of approved outside panel firms.
- Teach and learn from legal experts on coverage, trial strategy and strategic initiatives and emerging trends.
- Perform other duties or special projects.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receive direct supervision from Claim Counsel. May also receive guidance from Chief Legal Officer.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position does not supervise employees but may provide guidance to claims staff and outside counsel.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctor (JD) and/or active attorney’s license required.
- 5 or more years of legal or insurance-related experience preferred.
- Strong interest in insurance law, litigation, and claims handling.
- Ability to obtain state Adjuster’s License(s) where required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiating and presentation skills.
- Strong analytical and organizational abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal research tools.
- Expert knowledge of claims law strongly desired.
- Experience with reinsurance contracts related to claims.
- Ability to work collaboratively at all levels and manage multiple priorities.
- Commitment to professional development and learning.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Predominately sedentary office position with high frequency of computer systems work required.
- Overnight travel within the territory is occasionally required, especially attendance in court as needed.
- Potentially subject to stressful situations with respect to claim related disputes.
The salary range reflected is a good faith estimate of base pay for the position. In addition to base salary, this role is incentive compensation and benefits eligible, and individual salary will ultimately be determined based on individual experience, skills, qualifications and geographic location.
