Ophthalmic Assistant (Hybrid, 24 hours per week)

Description: Our Ophthalmic Assistant (OA) performs tasks to assist the doctor in patient care and administrative duties to ensure operational efficiency in the clinic. The OA takes measurements and administers tests that provide the doctor with the information needed to arrive at a diagnosis, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures. Our OA will assist with administrative activities e.g. answering phones, scheduling patients, scribing for the providers, assisting with EHR documentation and other patient services as assigned. This is a part-time, hybrid position. The OA is expected to attend the clinic in person on days when the providers are scheduled to see patients (approximately 1-2 days per week). The OA may conduct administrative activities remotely (including answering phones, scheduling patients, managing faxes and other duties as assigned), on days when patients are not scheduled in the clinic.

General Duties of the Ophthalmic Assistant:

  • History taking including medical and ophthalmic history (e.g., medications, allergies, surgical and in-office treatments)

  • Visual acuity measurement, pinhole testing

  • Tonometry (measure eye pressure) - iCare Tonometer

  • Measure pupil size and reactivity

  • Test and measure eye muscle function

  • Meibography - LipiScan, LipiView

  • Keratometry/Corneal Thickness/Tomography (Anterior Segment OCT) - Pentacam Tomographer

  • Prepare for, set up and assist with diagnostic testing on clinic days (1-2 days per week).

  • Prepare for, set up and assist with in-office procedures (Lipiflow, RadioFrequency, Intense Pulsed Light therapy, punctal plugs, scleral contact lenses, amniotic membrane contact lenses and others)

  • Patient Instruction (at home dry eye therapies, pre-treatment, post-treatment summaries, ensure informed consents are completed in advance of treatment and as necessary)

  • Scribing, data entry, and assisting with charting in EHR

  • Coordination of care with other providers

  • Clean, stock, and prepare rooms and testing area before and after clinic, between patients

  • Instrument cleaning and sterilization

  • Clinical inventory management

  • Assisting with office administrative duties as assigned (managing phones, triage patient calls/emails, appointment scheduling, faxes, etc) - at the front desk when in the clinic, remotely when not scheduled to be in clinic (3-4 days per week).

Our ideal candidate:

Someone who enjoys working with and helping others, who can show compassion, is an excellent communicator, and comfortable speaking with people they have not met before. It’s important to be willing to learn new computer programs, medical software platforms, and have the ability to do simple math calculations for taking payments. Experience working with patients in some capacity is preferred. Training for specific clinic and administrative duties will be provided.

Salary and benefits: commensurate with experience
