Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
This opportunity is for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support students in a school setting. The role offers a contract position based in Methuen, MA, focusing on providing essential mobility and orientation training to visually impaired or blind students, helping them gain independence and confidence in navigating their environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess students orientation and mobility skills and develop individualized training programs
- Teach safe and effective travel techniques using canes, auditory cues, and other adaptive tools
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other specialists to integrate mobility goals within the educational plan
- Provide ongoing monitoring and adjustment of mobility strategies as needed
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate regularly with the educational team
Desired Qualifications:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) or equivalent credentials
- Experience working with visually impaired or blind students in educational settings
- Strong understanding of orientation and mobility principles and techniques
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse student needs
