Job Title: Rental & Tuning Shop Manager Department: Rental & Retail Operations Reports To: General Manager Employment Type: Full-Time Seasonal

Position Summary

The Rental & Tuning Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the rental and tuning department, ensuring guests receive safe, properly maintained equipment and exceptional customer service. This position leads and develops the rental and tuning team, manages equipment maintenance programs, oversees inventory, and ensures compliance with all manufacturer standards, safety regulations, and company policies.

The manager is responsible for maintaining operational efficiency while fostering a positive team culture that supports an outstanding guest experience.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

    • Supervise, train, coach, and schedule rental and tuning staff.
    • Lead daily shop operations to ensure efficient guest service and equipment turnaround.
    • Maintain appropriate staffing levels during peak operating periods.
    • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development.
    • Promote a safe, positive, and professional work environment.
    • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and manufacturer guidelines.

Rental Operations

    • Oversee daily rental operations including equipment issue, return, inspection, and storage.
    • Ensure rental equipment is accurately fitted and adjusted according to industry standards.
  • Monitor equipment availability and fleet utilization.
  • Resolve guest concerns and service issues professionally and efficiently.
  • Coordinate with other departments to support resort operations and special events.

Equipment Maintenance & Tuning

  • Oversee all ski and snowboard tuning operations.
  • Perform and supervise:
    • Edge sharpening
    • Hot waxing
    • Base cleaning
    • Minor P-Tex repairs
    • Edge deburring
    • Belt or stone finishing (where applicable)
  • Inspect equipment for damage and determine when repairs or retirement from service are required.
  • Ensure all bindings are inspected, adjusted, and tested by certified personnel where required.
  • Maintain tuning machinery, waxing equipment, hand tools, and shop equipment.
  • Develop preventative maintenance schedules for the rental fleet.

Inventory Management

  • Maintain accurate inventory of rental equipment, tuning supplies, parts, and accessories.
  • Order replacement equipment and shop supplies as needed.
  • Track equipment repairs, maintenance history, and retirement schedules.
  • Conduct seasonal inventory counts and equipment audits.
  • Minimize equipment loss and damage through effective controls.

Guest Service

  • Deliver exceptional customer service to all guests.
  • Assist guests in selecting appropriate equipment.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Educate guests on proper equipment care and use.

Administration

  • Maintain accurate repair, maintenance, and inspection records.
  • Prepare operational reports as requested.
  • Monitor departmental budgets and recommend equipment purchases.
  • Ensure compliance with liability, documentation, and rental waiver procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in business, recreation, or a related field is an asset.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a ski rental, tuning, or retail environment.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Experience operating Wintersteiger or similar tuning equipment.
  • Understanding of point-of-sale systems
  • Strong knowledge of ski and snowboard equipment, tuning procedures, and rental operations.
  • Familiarity with binding adjustment standards and certification requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of ski and snowboard construction and repair techniques.
  • Experience with rental management or point-of-sale software-Toast and Axess preferred.
  • Inventory control and purchasing experience.
  • First Aid certification is an asset.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive manual tasks.
  • Operate tuning machinery and hand tools safely.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment during peak periods.

Work Environment

  • Indoor rental and tuning shop with occasional exposure to outdoor winter conditions.
  • Regular weekend, evening, and holiday shifts during the ski season.
  • Exposure to waxes, tuning equipment, machinery, noise, and cleaning products while following appropriate safety procedures.
