Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

This position offers an opportunity to work as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) within an educational setting located in Cambridge, MA. This contract role involves supporting students who have visual impairments by teaching them safe and effective navigation skills, promoting independence, and enhancing their overall mobility within school environments and the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility plans tailored to students' needs.
  • Assess students' mobility skills and adaptability to different environments.
  • Provide direct instruction in the use of assistive travel devices such as canes or electronic mobility aids.
  • Collaborate with educators, parents, and other service providers to support the student's educational goals.
  • Monitor student progress and update plans accordingly.
  • Conduct assessments to identify barriers and recommend environmental modifications.
  • Maintain detailed documentation and reports as required by the school and regulatory standards.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) is required.
  • Experience working with school-age children who have visual impairments.
  • Strong understanding of mobility aids, functional vision assessment, and adaptive techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and best practices in special education services.

Contract Details:

  • This is a contract assignment with a school setting focused on delivering specialized orientation and mobility services.
