Under the direction of, and as part of the team led by the Senior Aquatics Director, the Assistant Aquatics Director plans, monitors, and supervises all aspects of the Indoor Pool/Outdoor Pool operations. This includes pool chemistry and pool maintenance; budgeting; hiring; staff development; customer service; staff supervision; staff training; payroll; pool and staff scheduling; lifeguarding; lifeguard training and certification and swim instructors. Teaches swim lessons as needed. Oversees budgeting, supervision, hiring, training, evaluating staff, scheduling and payroll for: Lifeguard Certification Program, Aqua Aerobics and Masters Swim Program. In accordance with Agency standards, the Assistant Aquatics Director will take responsibility to collaborate with MRC and other departments to ensure highest standards of safety, customer service, collaborative problem solving and optimal member experience at all times.

Primary responsibilities include, and are not limited to:

Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the indoor and outdoor pools:

  • Provides on deck presence to both staff and members, in order to ensure excellent customer service at all times.
  • Effectively manages all aspects of the opening and closing the outdoor pool.
  • Acts as “On Call” staff person during off hours and weekends to troubleshoot operational and staffing issues that may arise.
  • Act as a substitute for absent guards when needed.
  • Acts as OD (on Duty Manager) as assigned, and coordinates the schedule with OD supervisor.
  • Performs swim instruction as needed for all programs including ELC, LKSA and camp lessons.
  • Coordinates staff, participants and pool schedules for each of the programs taking into account the pool schedules as a whole.
  • Works with maintenance department to maintain pool chemistry and communicates with the local board of health.
  • Works with maintenance department to get proper permits for pools and whirlpools.
  • Keeps accurate chemical readings, bather logs, and other pool chemistry logs.
  • Acts as CPO and coordinates all pool chemistry issues with maintenance staff.
  • Re-orders and stocks necessary pool supplies, sales merchandise, first aid supplies and all other necessary items for both pools as well as the rest of the building.
  • Manage emergency action plan documentation for the Aquatics Department, specifically separate documents for IDP and ODP.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Develops and manages the operating budget for indoor and outdoor pools:

  • Monitors labor and supply expense of Indoor and Outdoor pools.
  • Assist in the preparation of budget labor and supply lines for Aquatics budgets.

Coordinates Lifeguard Certification Program:

  • Administers at least 3 Full Lifeguard Training Courses and 2 Recertification Courses annually.
  • Manages registration process and external communication for course participants.
  • Schedules all logistics and space requirements for courses.
  • Oversees supply inventories for course materials.
  • Assist in preparation of budget lines relating to revenue and expense to the program.

Standard staff expectations:

  • Actively create a welcoming dynamic where each individual feels seen and welcomed.
  • Actively participate as an essential member of the Aquatics Department team.
  • Support JCC Greater Boston’s mission, vision, and values including through personal role modeling and contribute to the overall organizational success.
  • Attend JCCGB All Staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises and serves as a role model for assigned positions Aquatics lifeguards, outdoor pool managers, and other outdoor pool staff as assigned. (Also supervises all part-time On Duty-Operations Managers.)

  • Schedules, hires and trains lifeguards inside and outside, and coordinate indoor and outdoor pool lifeguard schedules.
  • Supervises and evaluates part-time aquatic staff, observing lifeguards in order to maintain a high level of instruction and safety.
  • Trains all lifeguards on emergency response scenarios and expectations.
  • Ensures all program staff is properly certified and trained in the JCC safety and Aquatics protocols for safety and customer service.
  • Performs all aspects of time and attendance reporting for payroll for each of the program staff supervisees: responsible for aquatics lifeguards and other outdoor pool personnel payroll on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Coordinates and administers in-service training for lifeguards on a monthly (indoor pool) and daily (outdoor pool), when possible, as well as customer service training.
  • Attends JCC Management trainings and other related trainings.

This full-time, salaried position offers a comprehensive benefits package, a supportive, primarily in-person work environment with an occasional work option for limited administrative duties, and a competitive starting salary range between $58-62K annually.

The salary offered will ultimately be determined by relevant qualifications, experience, and JCC's internal equity.

Requirements

Education and Experience: BS in Health, Fitness and/or Recreation required and a minimum of 3 years of Aquatics experience and 1+ years experience supervising a program or staff. Equivalent combination of education and experience may satisfy criteria at the sole discretion of the JCC. Certifications required: LG, LGI, LKSA, CPO, CPR, First Aid and AED. Must be a proficient swimmer and able to perform water safety rescues. Aquatics supervisory and budgeting experience desired.

Skills and Abilities: Must have management and supervisory skills. Computer skills (e-mail, Word and Excel) required. Ability to work with multiple departments to plan, schedule and coordinate programs. Excellent customer service and communications skills required.

  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, early mornings and be on-call when not on the premises. Schedule will change seasonally depending on the needs of the department.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift small children in and out of water. Ability to perform all duties (physically). Ability to handle and be around pool chemicals. Ability to work many hours in an indoor pool setting (temperature and atmosphere).
