The HVAC Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring optimal comfort and quality of service for employees, orchestra, and patrons. This role involves interacting with staff, food and beverage teams, and collaborating with contractors and engineers to design and service HVAC and plumbing systems. The technician will coordinate with city services and steam companies to manage water mains, catch basins, and supply steam.
Responsibilities
- Perform journeyman-level work in maintenance, modification, overhaul, installation, service, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, chiller, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
- Machine and fabricate parts as necessary.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on HVAC systems including air handling units, steam absorption chiller, cooling towers, pumps, valves, fans, and other ancillary equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair systems and equipment, including breaking down and rebuilding equipment.
- Advise Facility Engineer on technical aspects of capital projects, lead and assist contractors, and research and recommend new equipment and procedures.
- Arrange for testing and balancing of air systems to ensure optimal ventilation, indoor air quality, and precise equipment controls.
- Monitor Building Management System for optimal utility use and recommend improvements.
- Maintain life-safety systems such as fire sprinkler systems, alarms, smoke detection, and emergency generator.
- Participate in general duties like event logistics, room setups, receiving dock activities, security, and emergency response.
Essential Skills
- Journeyman-level license in HVAC and refrigeration.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in maintaining HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing systems.
- Skilled in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and solving technical problems.
- Experience in machining and fabricating parts.
- Intermediate skills in electrical wiring and plumbing systems.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and make judgment calls regarding resource usage.
- Technical writing skills for documentation.
- Advanced ability to interpret blueprints and technical manuals.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent with preference for advanced education in HVAC and refrigeration.
- Experience in historic facilities or public institutions.
- Familiarity with operation of lathes, welding equipment, milling, boring, honing, and surfacing machines.
- Experience in meeting quality assurance standards.
- Some experience in reviewing contractor estimates.
- Strong computer skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and internet access.

Work Environment
The role requires strenuous physical activity, including climbing ladders, accessing confined spaces, and working in all weather conditions. Lifting up to 50 pounds is necessary, and safety precautions must be followed, including the use of personal protective equipment. Availability 24/7 is required to respond to facility needs, and qualification to operate a fork truck is necessary.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Boston, MA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
