SCOPE OF WORK: Performs duties as necessary in the testing and preparation of laboratory materials, including chemical solutions, bacterial cultures, etc., and the set-up and maintenance of laboratory equipment for chemistry and biological sciences classes at NHTI, Concord’s Community College. This position reports to the Department Chair for Natural Sciences at NHTI.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Assists students and faculty with use of laboratory equipment Assists faculty in running labs and troubleshooting experiments; Keeps laboratories organized; Proctors lab exams; Hires and supervises work-study students;
  • Accurately prepares chemical mixtures and solutions for use, set up and maintains laboratory equipment as necessary in both the chemistry and biological sciences laboratories;
  • Maintains and prepares cultures and culture media for faculty and student use in labs;
  • Provides general laboratory maintenance including, but not limited to, repairing microscopes, and setting up and taking down laboratories;
  • Initiates the purchase of supplies and purchase and repair of laboratory equipment, contacts commercial vendors as instructed by the Department Chair; Maintains appropriate levels of inventory and supplies, and prepares record-keeping systems for purchases and repairs;
  • Stores and disposes of chemical and biological wastes in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations for all of NHTI;
  • Responsible for monitoring all laboratory eye wash stations for functionality;
  • Maintains the hazardous materials list throughout campus in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations for all of NHTI and works with Maintenance Department to coordinate hazardous material disposal/pick-up; Assists faculty in the setup of record-keeping systems relative to EPA and OSHA compliance; Maintains appropriate records relative to EPA and OSHA; Liaises with DES for hazardous waste pickup;
  • Responsible for training faculty and staff on proper labeling and disposal procedures for chemical waste;
  • Complies with all college, system, state and federal rules and regulations;
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate's or technical degree or education equivalency relevant to the program area

Experience: 4 years' related experience. Specific certification, license, or type of experience may be required, depending on program.

License/Certification: None required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience using Macintosh and Windows PCs.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Considerable knowledge of the procedures and practices of laboratory technology. Considerable knowledge of the use of laboratory equipment and skill in the application of techniques utilized in conducting analyses using complicated laboratory equipment. Ability to follow standard laboratory methods and procedures. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to maintain exact records of tests conducted. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
