Job DescriptionDirect Counsel is seeking a Real Estate Transactional & Environmental Counsel with 10+ years of experience to join a sophisticated Real Estate, Energy & Environmental practice in Boston. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior attorney seeking a flexible, part-time role while continuing to work on complex environmental, land use, and real estate matters for sophisticated regional, national, and multinational clients.

The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience advising clients on Massachusetts environmental law, land use and zoning matters, regulatory permitting, and environmental issues arising in commercial real estate and business transactions.

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on Massachusetts environmental laws and regulatory compliance matters
  • Counsel developers, property owners, industrial facilities, manufacturers, utilities, and energy companies on environmental and land use issues
  • Navigate complex local, state, and regulatory permitting processes
  • Provide strategic guidance regarding environmental risks and liabilities associated with real estate and business transactions
  • Support acquisitions, dispositions, leasing transactions, development projects, and related real estate matters
  • Advise clients regarding zoning, land use, permitting, and regulatory approvals
  • Handle matters involving environmental investigations, remediation, and agency enforcement actions
  • Collaborate with attorneys across real estate, corporate, energy, and environmental practice areas on multidisciplinary matters

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of environmental and real estate law experience
  • Significant experience with Massachusetts environmental laws and regulations
  • Strong background in land use, zoning, and permitting matters
  • Experience advising on environmental compliance and environmental risk management in transactional matters
  • Experience involving:
    • RCRA
    • CERCLA
    • Agency enforcement actions
    • Regulatory permitting
    • Environmental due diligence
  • General commercial real estate transactional experience preferred
  • Experience with acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, development agreements, and construction-related matters is a plus
  • Outstanding academic credentials
  • Excellent written, verbal, analytical, and communication skills
  • J.D. required
  • Active Massachusetts Bar admission required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation range: $175–$200 per hour
