Role Description The Staff Optometrist is a full-time, on-site role based in Amherst, MA, providing comprehensive eye care services to students and other eligible members of the university community. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing routine and specialized eye examinations, diagnosing and managing vision and ocular health conditions, and prescribing corrective lenses or treatments. The role involves educating patients on eye health, preventive care, and appropriate use of visual aids, as well as coordinating referrals to ophthalmology or other specialists when needed. The Staff Optometrist will document clinical findings in electronic health records, collaborate with other healthcare professionals within the university’s health services, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives. Additional responsibilities may include participation in outreach or educational activities related to vision care and supporting the training of staff or learners as appropriate.\n
Qualifications

- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution and current, unrestricted optometry license (or eligibility for licensure) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Demonstrated clinical competence in comprehensive eye examinations, diagnosis and management of common ocular conditions, and prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses.
- Strong skills in patient communication, education, and cultural sensitivity, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse university population.
- Experience with electronic health records, accurate clinical documentation, and adherence to privacy and regulatory standards (e.g., HIPAA).
- Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, manage a consistent patient schedule, and exercise sound clinical judgment in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development, evidence-based practice, and continuous quality improvement in clinical care.
- Preferred: Experience in a college health, community health, or outpatient clinical setting; familiarity with vision screening programs and public health initiatives.
