Salary rate: $23-$26 per hour as Instructor
$27-$30 per hour for private lessons
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Swim Instructor, from July through the end of August 2026, is responsible for providing safe, engaging, and effective recreational swim instruction to participants of all ages and skill levels. This role focuses on teaching water safety, stroke development, and building confidence in an around the water. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefits eligible position with the exception of those benefits required by law.
SCHEDULE:
This position’s schedule includes weekday afternoons, evenings, and weekend shifts based on program needs.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Strong demonstrated swimming skills and previous swim instruction experience
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with participants of varying ages and abilities
PREFERRED:
- Lifeguard Certification (training/certification opportunities available for qualified candidates)
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction and Program Delivery
- Plan and deliver structured swim lessons aligned with program standards
- Teach water safety skills and proper stroke technique
- Adapt lessons to meet individual participant needs and skill levels
- Maintain a positive, encouraging, and inclusive learning environment
Safety and Supervision
- Ensure the safety of all participants at all times
- Enforce pool rules and facility policies
- Respond appropriately to emergencies in accordance with training
Communication and Customer Service
- Communicate effectively with participants, parents, and staff
- Provide feedback on participant progress when appropriate
- Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor
Facility and Administrative Duties
- Assist with setup and breakdown of lesson equipment
- Keep pool deck and instructional areas clean and organized
- Complete attendance and any required program documentation
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain in the pool for extended periods
- Ability to lift or assist participants when needed
- Exposure to pool chemicals and varying temperatures
The Phillips Academy Aquatics Center features a 25-yard competition pool that serves as the home venue for Andover’s swimming, diving, and water polo programs. The pool can be configured with eight competition lanes or 13 practice lanes, providing flexibility for training, competition, instructional swim lessons, and recreational programming. It is also home to New England’s only full-sized high school water polo course.
This state-of-the-art facility includes adjustable starting blocks, two 1-meter diving boards with a dedicated diving area, an OMEGA Swiss Timing System for competitive events, and on-deck spectator seating for more than 300 guests. While the pool is utilized by Phillips Academy’s aquatics teams throughout the year, the Aquatics Center is expanding its offerings to include community recreation programs, diving instruction, lifeguard certification courses, competitive swim training, and swim lessons for participants of all ages and abilities. The facility is committed to providing high-quality aquatic opportunities for both the Academy and the greater community.
Rate of pay will be based on experience and qualifications.
