Preschool Lead Teacher — Job Responsibilities
1. Classroom Leadership
- Lead the daily operation of the preschool classroom.
- Create and maintain a safe, clean, nurturing, and organized classroom.
- Establish consistent classroom routines and schedules.
- Model positive, respectful interactions with children and staff.
- Assign classroom duties to assistant teachers.
2. Curriculum & Lesson Planning
- Plan and implement age-appropriate activities and lessons.
- Follow the center's curriculum and learning goals.
- Provide activities covering language, literacy, math, science, art, music, movement, social-emotional development, and self-help skills.
- Adapt activities to meet individual children's developmental needs.
- Prepare weekly lesson plans and classroom materials.
3. Child Supervision & Safety
- Maintain active supervision of all children.
- Follow center health, safety, emergency, and sanitation procedures.
- Complete attendance and head counts.
- Monitor children's physical, social, emotional, and developmental needs.
- Report injuries, accidents, illnesses, and safety concerns according to center policy.
4. Child Development & Documentation
- Observe children's development and behavior.
- Maintain required classroom records and documentation.
- Complete developmental observations and assessments.
- Document children's progress and areas needing additional support.
- Participate in developing individualized strategies when appropriate.
5. Family Communication
- Build positive relationships with parents and guardians.
- Communicate children's daily activities, accomplishments, and concerns.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences.
- Provide information for classroom newsletters and family communications.
- Maintain confidentiality of children's and families' information.
6. Staff Supervision & Teamwork
- Guide and support assistant teachers.
- Help train new classroom staff.
- Delegate classroom responsibilities.
- Monitor classroom staff performance and professionalism.
- Conduct or participate in classroom meetings.
- Report significant staff or classroom concerns to the Director.
7. Classroom Management
- Establish clear, developmentally appropriate expectations.
- Use positive guidance and behavior-support strategies.
- Help children develop self-regulation, problem-solving, cooperation, and independence.
- Never use corporal punishment or inappropriate disciplinary practices.
8. Professional Responsibilities
- Attend required staff meetings and professional-development activities.
- Maintain required certifications and training.
- Follow Massachusetts EEC regulations and center policies.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Complete other reasonable classroom responsibilities assigned by the Director.
