Museum Program Associate
Job Description
Job Description
Are you passionate about history, people, and making an impact?
The Museum of African American History in Boston is looking for a Museum Program Associate to join our team — and this is not your average part-time gig.
This is the role where you stand inside one of America's most significant historic sites and bring it to life.
We're talking about a nearly 200-year-old African Meeting House — a place where abolitionists gathered, where freedom was debated, and where the course of American history shifted. You'll be the person who helps a school kid or a curious traveler understand why that still matters today.
If you love history, thrive with people, and want your work to mean something, keep reading.
What you'll actually be doing:
You're the Museum's frontline ambassador. That means leading tours, running school programs, welcoming visitors, and managing the day-to-day of admissions and our museum store. You'll work across a collection of iconic Boston and Nantucket sites — including the African Meeting Houses, the Abiel Smith School, and the Black Heritage Trail.
No two days look the same. One morning you're facilitating a workshop with middle schoolers. That afternoon you're welcoming international visitors and sharing the story of the abolitionist movement. It is hands-on, community-centered work that connects history to the issues people are still wrestling with today.
You'd be a great fit if you:
✔ Have a background (or strong interest) in African American history, public history, museum studies, or a related field
✔ Love public speaking and can connect with audiences of all ages and backgrounds
✔ Bring warmth, professionalism, and reliability to everything you do
✔ Are available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
✔ Speak a second language (a bonus, not a requirement)
