Environmental Compliance Specialist

PublishedPublished: 6/14/2022

Job Description

Job DescriptionENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE PROFESSIONALTurn complex industrial operations into clean, compliant performance

You’ll be the boots on-the-ground environmental expert for a heavy industrial facility and a network of transfer stations, landfills, and material-processing sites across Central and Eastern Massachusetts.

This isn’t a clipboard job in a back office.

You’ll walk the sites, dig into the data, drive corrective actions, and make sure air, water, ash, and waste programs are tight, defensible, and on time with regulators.

Working side-by-side with a Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist and regional leaders, you’ll see how a complex waste-to-energy operation really runs—and how your work directly protects the environment and keeps the plants online.

If you’ve already owned environmental compliance in heavy industry or power generation and want visible, high-accountability work, we want to talk to you.

What You'll Work On

You’ll touch every major environmental program across a live industrial ecosystem:

  • Air emissions and stack compliance
  • CEMS performance and records
  • Ash and solid-waste management
  • Stormwater and wastewater programs
  • Potable water compliance
  • Hazardous waste handling and documentation
  • Permit applications, renewals, and modifications
  • Regulatory reports and inspections across multiple facilities

You’ll work daily with environmental data, facility teams, consultants, and labs to keep programs compliant and inspection-ready.

The core challenge: keep complex, high-energy operations compliant in the real-world conditions of active industrial plants.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Supporting environmental compliance programs for air, CEMS, ash, solid waste, stormwater, wastewater, potable water, and hazardous waste
  • Participating in facility permit applications, renewals, modifications, and supporting documentation for construction, operation, and expansion
  • Completing and reviewing environmental testing, monitoring data, records, and regulatory reports
  • Ensuring all environmental submittals are accurate, complete, timely, and properly retained
  • Conducting environmental walkdowns at the main facility and satellite locations and documenting findings
  • Coordinating corrective actions with operations and maintenance and tracking them through closure
  • Supporting air-emissions and CEMS activities, including review of emissions records, test results, and equipment logs
  • Coordinating environmental testing and compliance work with consultants, engineers, contractors, and laboratories
  • Analyzing environmental and operational data to identify compliance risks, trends, and improvement opportunities
  • Supporting regulatory-inspection readiness and explaining technical compliance matters to operating teams and external stakeholders
  • Monitoring federal and state regulatory changes and helping update permits, test plans, procedures, and compliance strategies
  • Supporting growth initiatives and community outreach for mercury and mercury-containing-product diversion

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, biology, or related field; or relevant power-plant, industrial-operations, or military experience in place of a degree
  • At least three years of direct, on-site environmental compliance experience in heavy industrial, energy, power-generation, waste-to-energy, landfill, transfer-station, recycling, material-processing, or similar facilities
  • Hands-on experience with environmental permits, renewals or modifications, regulatory reports or submissions, inspections, and corrective-action follow-up
  • Direct experience with testing, monitoring, data review, documentation, or reporting across multiple programs such as air, water, solid waste, ash, stormwater, wastewater, potable water, or hazardous waste
  • Comfort working in active industrial conditions with a strong understanding of facility operations
  • Experience collaborating with operations, maintenance, contractors, consultants, laboratories, or regulatory agencies
  • Ability to use environmental or operational data-management tools to prepare clear technical records, reports, and presentations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a track record of meeting testing and reporting deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint
  • Prior Massachusetts-specific experience, particularly MassDEP and have managed hazardous waste, RCRA, and DOT requirements.

Prior exposure to: thermomechanical treatment • power-generation • boiler/combustion systems • air-pollution control • stack-testing • CEMS • transfer stations • landfills • material-processing facilities • recycling facilities • Massachusetts environmental compliance • MassDEP • hazardous waste • RCRA • DOT • Microsoft Copilot • Massachusetts PE • Drinking Water Operator credentialImportant Requirements

Day travel of approximately 10%–20% across Eastern and Central Massachusetts is required.
Must be able to work throughout active industrial facilities, including hot, cold, dusty, noisy, wet, and odorous areas.
Must be able to wear required PPE and a respirator; climb ladders and work at heights with fall protection
