About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join an engineering team based in Wilmington, MA. This role supports controls engineering project requirements including PLC/DCS/HMI/SCADA programming, database management, control panel design, instrumentation specification, and commissioning support for industrial processes and machinery.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, design, and implement control systems for industrial processes and machinery.
  • Develop control system architecture and select system components.
  • Prepare electrical and control schematics and related documentation.
  • Program controllers (PLC, DCS, RTU) and develop HMI/SCADA interfaces.
  • Create and maintain databases for archiving and displaying historical system data.
  • Support system check-out, start-up, and commissioning at client sites.
  • Work independently and as part of a project team; may serve as technical lead on selected projects.
  • Provide guidance to junior engineers and technicians as needed.
  • Travel to client sites up to 25% of the time.


Must-Have Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Controls/Automation Engineer.
  • Strong experience with PLC hardware/software (Rockwell Automation).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms such as Rockwell Automation and/or Inductive Automation Ignition.
  • Recent hands-on experience with Emerson DeltaV DCS.
  • Instrumentation experience (specifying, configuring, and troubleshooting field instruments).
  • Experience with standard programming languages (VBA, .NET, SQL) for HMI/SCADA development.
  • Ability to read and develop electrical schematics and control panel drawings.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% and work in diverse industrial environments.
  • Stable work history.


Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial networking (fiber, wired, wireless) and protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus.
  • Familiarity with power distribution under 480VAC, control panels, and NEC standards.
  • Experience with automation protocols: HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Traditional I/O, Profibus, Ethernet I/P, OPC, Modbus TCP/IP.
  • Leadership skills and strong client-facing communication.
  • Familiarity with S88 Batch.
  • Experience in life sciences environments and regulations (cGMP, 21 CFR Part 11).
  • Knowledge of GAMP5 and system/software development life cycle and validation.
  • Experience working with SQL databases.

Location: Wilmington, MA (100% on-site – office and client sites).

  • Regular visits to a nearby client site (approx. 35–40 minutes from the office) are expected for at least the next 1.5 years. Mileage is reimbursed for these trips.
