Reports To: Engineering Manager or R&D Lead
Position Summary
The Engineering Technician supports both manufacturing and research & development activities within an electro-optical product environment. This role bridges hands-on production support and prototype development, assisting engineers in the design, testing, integration, and improvement of electro-optical systems. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically skilled, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment involving precision optics, electronics, and mechanical assemblies.
Key Responsibilities
Manufacturing & Engineering Support
- Support production of electro-optical assemblies and subassemblies, including optical, electronic, and mechanical components
- Assist in process development, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and collaborate with engineering to implement corrective actions
- Perform assembly, alignment, calibration, and testing of electro-optical systems
- Maintain engineering builds, fixtures, and test setups
Research & Development Support
- Assist engineers with prototype builds, experimental setups, and feasibility testing
- Support optical and electronic testing, data collection, and analysis
- Modify existing designs or components under engineering direction
- Document test procedures, results, and design changes
- Participate in design reviews and contribute practical manufacturing feedback
Testing & Documentation
- Execute functional, environmental, and performance testing per engineering specifications
- Operate and maintain test equipment such as optical benches, oscilloscopes, power meters, and interferometers
- Create and update work instructions, test procedures, and engineering documentation
- Ensure compliance with quality standards and configuration control requirements
General Duties
- Maintain cleanroom or controlled lab environments as required
- Follow ESD, safety, and quality procedures
- Support cross-functional teams including Quality, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Electronics, Optics, or related technical field (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Technician in an electro-optical, photonics, electronics, or related manufacturing environment
- Hands-on experience with electro-optical assemblies and test equipment
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting R&D or new product development programs
- Familiarity with optical alignment, laser systems, imaging sensors, or photonic components
- Experience with prototype builds and low-volume manufacturing
- Knowledge of GD&T, SPC, and basic data analysis
- Experience working in regulated environments (ISO, AS9100, FDA, etc.)
