Job Description

Location: Massachusetts (Hybrid Work Schedule with Offices in Westborough and Hanover)

Start Date: September 2025 - Rolling Applications open for our Next Junior Associate Class: (Approximately 5 People)

You're graduating from law school. Now What?

Obviously, you're going to be gearing up to take the bar exam, but you're also likely starting to think about what you're going to do after. As a new attorney, it can be hard to find a job because most firms want experience. Law school taught you how to think like a lawyer, but it likely didn't teach you to be a lawyer. We have a solution for you if you're interested in family law!

O'Connor Family Law is passionate about divorce and custody law (and all the other areas that come along with it), and we aren't just another firm. We are warriors for the underdog. We fight hard, we lead with our heart, and we win with integrity. We don't just handle family law matters - we change lives. We currently have a team of 10 attorneys, but we are looking to build our next generation of fierce family law litigators.

We are opening our doors to a new class of hungry, passionate, and ambitious Junior Associates who are ready to learn, grow, and become courtroom-ready Associate Attorneys after 3-6 months of intensive education and training.

What You'll Get:

  • Intensive, Hands-On Training in family law litigation and mediation, client advocacy, court practice, client development, case strategy, and trial prep.
  • Mentorship From Experienced Litigators who want to see you succeed. This includes not only the OCFL team, but we have partnered with retired family law Judges, outside trial attorneys, and other experienced professionals to assist with our training to help make you the best attorney you can possibly be.
  • Real Responsibility Early On. Even while under the Junior Associate title, you will have true client practice and hands-on experience in just a few short months because we believe some of the best learning comes from doing.
  • A Mission-Driven Culture where we focus on improving the futures of clients, our team, our firm, and our community through our values of C.H.A.N.G.E.
  • A Clear Growth Path - You will become an Associate Attorney and take on your own case load as the lead attorney when you graduate from the Junior Associate class (which automatically comes with a higher compensation plan).
  • Paid While Training - You're likely walking away from law school with student loans, but this training will pay you so long as you are committed to remaining with the firm. We believe in investing in our future.

Who You Are:

  • A recent JD graduate getting ready to take the bar exam in Massachusetts (Dual licensure in RI is a plus)
  • A seasoned lawyer who doesn't have family law experience, but you are looking for an opportunity to get into family law.
  • Someone who thrives under pressure, communicates like a pro, has a heart for helping people through their hardest moments, and wants to be known as a fierce (yet fair) litigator and incredible negotiator.
  • Passionate about improving the legal system, making a name for yourself, having significant career promotion opportunities within a single firm, and maybe even potentially becoming a Judge someday.

Who this is NOT for:

  • If you're looking for a low-stress job to ease into your career... this isn't that.
  • If you're afraid of court or can't imagine standing toe-to-toe with an adversary... this might not be your thing (yet).
  • If you want to coast, clock in and out, and wait five years to make an impact... you won't fit here.
  • If you're afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone and learning new things... this won't be the place for you.

Why O'Connor Family Law?

We are not just lawyers. We're community leaders, disruptors, and fierce advocates. We focus on negotiation and settlement, but have no problem putting on the boxing gloves and stepping into the ring when it's best for the client. We practice ethically and professionally, but do not let our niceness be taken for granted as weakness. Our firm is committed to empowering clients, supporting our team's growth, and building a legacy of strength, compassion, and results.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with and rapidly transition into direct client representation in divorce, custody, and support matters under supervision.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, affidavits, and proposals with guidance from senior attorneys.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support litigation strategy and case preparation.
  • Attend and participate in case evaluations, strategy sessions, court appearances, and other related litigation events - shadowing at first and then moving toward taking the lead.
  • Communicate with clients regularly to provide updates, gather information, and manage expectations with professionalism and empathy.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop case strategy, improve procedures, and ensure high-quality, consistent client service.
  • Participate in firm-led training, mentorship, and skills-building sessions to develop strong litigation and negotiation skills.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills - clarity, compassion, and confidence are key.
  • Detail-oriented with Strong Organizational Skills to manage multiple deadlines and case demands.
  • Ability to thrive in a Fast-Paced Environment and embrace structured training and feedback.
  • Emotional Intelligence and Resiliance to work with clients in crisis and advocate with empathy and clarity.
  • The ability to show a past interest in litigation, client advocacy, or related clinical programs is a plus, but not required.

About Company

Values: C.H.A.N.G.E.

Courageousness: Life unfolds in proportion to your ability to face fears, stand up for what is right, and to inspire change. Sometimes someone else needs you to be courageous for them so they can find the strength in themselves.

Honesty: We don't just tell people what they want to hear. The truth isn’t always the easiest, but not telling it destroys trust.

Ambitiousness: We shoot for the stars and never settle for being just good enough. The goal for massive improvement is to try to be just 1% better every day.

Navigator: Our goal is to be like a lighthouse that continues to shine and guide others through the rough waters to safety.

Growth: We possess a never-ending drive to push ourselves and those around us to continuously improve personally, professionally, and emotionally.

Empowerment: When you change the way you think, you change your future. We cannot empower someone to do or be something; we can only give them the tools to empower themselves to reach their goals.
