Job Title: CNC Machinist (Weekend Shift)

Job Description

This weekend shift machinist role is a hands-on position on a busy machine shop floor, working alongside a small team of experienced machinists. You will hollow out metal bars to precise diameters for use in future medical device production, operating a variety of machining equipment and working largely autonomously with regular check-ins from supervision. The role is structured on a compressed weekend schedule, providing focused production time and a tight-knit team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC machines, milling machines, grinders, lathes, and related equipment to hollow out metal bars to specified diameters for medical device applications.
  • Set up, run, and monitor machining operations to ensure parts meet precise measurements, tolerances, and quality standards.
  • Use measuring tools and perform basic math calculations to verify part dimensions and maintain consistent accuracy throughout production runs.
  • Work autonomously on the machine shop floor while maintaining clear communication and periodic check-ins with supervisors and production leadership.
  • Collaborate with approximately 10 other machinists on the shop floor to coordinate workflow, share equipment, and support overall production goals.
  • Follow established machining processes, safety procedures, and shop protocols while working with centerless grinding, milling, 5-axis, and other grinding machines as needed.
  • Inspect finished components, identify any defects or deviations, and make necessary adjustments to machines or processes to correct issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including routine care and basic maintenance of machines and tools.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by suggesting process enhancements, setup optimizations, and tooling improvements.
  • Adhere to the weekend 3x12 schedule and reliably complete assigned production tasks within the designated shift hours.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience operating machining equipment such as centerless grinders, milling machines, 5-axis machines, CNC machines, lathes, and grinders.
  • Proficiency with CNC machining and related machine operations in a production or machine shop environment.
  • Strong ability to use measuring tools (such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges) to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Solid math skills to perform measurements, conversions, and basic calculations required in machining work.
  • Experience with grinding operations, including centerless grinding, to achieve precise finishes and dimensions.
  • Experience in milling operations, CNC machining, or grinder operation in a manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high quality and productivity.
  • Comfort working in a loud, active machine shop environment with multiple machines running simultaneously.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Understanding of tooling requirements, including tool selection and setup for various machining operations, is preferred.
  • Experience with machine setup, including fixtures, tooling, and program adjustments, is a plus.
  • Prior work in environments similar to precision bearings, milling, CNC machining, or grinding operations is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with 5-axis machining processes and multi-axis equipment is advantageous.
  • Experience as a CNC machinist, milling machinist, or grinder operator is highly relevant.
  • Ability to interpret basic work instructions, part specifications, and machining guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise components.

Why Work Here?

You will join a small, close-knit team at a site with a low headcount, fostering strong collaboration and a supportive atmosphere. The culture is relaxed and low-key, offering an environment where you can focus on your craft without excessive bureaucracy. The compressed weekend schedule provides predictable hours and concentrated workdays, supporting work-life balance and personal flexibility.

Work Environment

This role is based in a machine shop located within a converted office building, offering a unique blend of office-style space and industrial equipment. The shop floor houses multiple machines running simultaneously, creating a loud, active production environment typical of machining operations. You will work on a weekend 3x12 schedule, typically Friday through Sunday, with shift options of 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The environment is focused on precision manufacturing, with access to CNC machines, milling equipment, grinders, lathes, and measuring tools, and is designed to support autonomous work while maintaining regular communication with supervisors.
