Job Description About the Role

As a Stationary Engineer on our Utilities team, you keep the plant running. Your day spans high‑pressure steam production, cogeneration, process cooling, compressed air, and wastewater treatment—ensuring every system runs safely, efficiently, and in full regulatory compliance.

A Day in the Life

Picture starting your shift with a walkthrough of the boiler room, turbine deck, cooling towers, and air compressors. You’re checking trends, fine‑tuning controls, logging performance, and spotting issues before they impact operations. When water chemistry drifts, you correct it. When gauges trend off‑nominal, you dig into root causes. And when equipment needs to be isolated, you execute Lock Out Tag Out to enable safe maintenance.

Systems You’ll Operate

  • High‑pressure steam boilers and auxiliary equipment
  • Electric power generation (cogeneration)
  • Process cooling water systems
  • Compressed air systems
  • Water and wastewater treatment systems

What You’ll Do

  • Operate, monitor, and inspect boilers, generators, air compressors, cooling water, water treatment, and all associated pumps, valves, transmitters, gauges, alarms, and safety devices to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe performance.
  • Keep precise logs of operations, maintenance activities, safety checks, test results, instrument readings, and any equipment issues to demonstrate continuous regulatory compliance.
  • Uphold local, state, and federal requirements for air quality, water quality, and safety at all times.
  • Maintain proper boiler water levels; adjust combustion air and regulate fuel flow to burners.
  • Test and treat water chemistry for steam generation, process cooling, and wastewater to maintain correct conditions.
  • Interpret meters, gauges, and charts to verify boilers are operating within normal parameters.
  • Troubleshoot abnormalities, determine corrective actions, and restore stable operations.
  • Adjust controls and valves to regulate system setpoints and performance.
  • Mechanically and electrically isolate equipment to enable safe inspection and repair (LOTO).
  • Keep the Utilities Chief Engineer informed of operating conditions and issues.
  • Champion our fundamentals: Safety, Appearance, Compliance, Quality, and Cost.
  • Conduct employee safety and equipment audits as assigned and perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts Third Class Engineers License.
  • 3+ years working with high‑pressure boilers and related equipment.
  • Ability to obtain a Grade 3M or higher Municipal Wastewater License within 12 months of start.

Skills & Competencies

  • Operation Monitoring, Operation & Control, and Monitoring skills.
  • Critical Thinking and problem analysis.
  • Active Listening and clear communication across shifts.
  • Proficiency in Boiler Troubleshooting, Boiler Operation, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
  • Comfort with computers, test equipment, and technical devices; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • GMP and food‑grade knowledge preferred.

Physical & Work Environment

  • Extensive field work across the facility; frequent walking and standing.
  • Work in confined spaces and at heights (boilers, cooling towers, storage tanks).
  • Use of tools and machinery; lift/push/pull/carry up to 65 lbs.
  • Frequent ladder climbing to access mission‑critical equipment.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions; extreme hot and cold environments may occur.
  • Periodic potential exposure to hazardous chemicals/conditions; training is mandatory.

Schedule & Availability

12‑hour shifts with a two‑week rotation covering days and nights:

  • Day: 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Night: 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.
  • Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday (48 hours)
  • Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday (36 hours)

Work schedule may periodically rotate and can include holidays and weekends. Team members support a 24‑hour on‑call capacity and must be able to respond across a multi‑shift operation.
