Pay Range/ Status: $65,000 – 80,000/Exempt

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Senior Director of Facilities and Grounds

Anticipated Start Date: Immediately

BENEFITS:

  • Holidays - 12 paid holidays per calendar year, including 3 floating holidays (floating holidays based on start date).
  • Personal Days - 1 personal day per fiscal year.
  • Sick days - 1 sick day accruing per month (Maximum of 130 days).
  • Vacation days - 20 paid vacation days per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

Hampshire College also has a winter break that is fully paid for employees from Christmas Eve to New Year’s each year, typically 6 ½ paid days.

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Environmental Health and Safety Manager administers and coordinate Environmental Health and Safety regulatory compliance programs in accordance with applicable federal and Massachusetts requirements, including U.S. OSHA, U.S. EPA, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and other applicable regulatory agencies.

The Manager is responsible for the College’s hazardous waste management program and for supporting compliance with applicable local, state, and federal environmental and occupational safety regulations. The Manager serves as a primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and fulfills permit and inspection requests by local authorities having jurisdiction.

The Manager develops and maintains environmental health and safety policies and safe work practices for employees and others engaged in activities with occupational or environmental risk.

The Manager supports Hampshire College’s educational mission by conducting inspections, maintain required records, responding to emergencies, and providing technical assistance to the campus community in order to promote a safe and environmentally responsible campus environment.

The manager offers support for student initiatives, academic projects, and faculty requests for assistance involving environmental or safety hazards.

SKILLS:

  • Strong computer skills, or the ability to train, in G-Suite and Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.

  • Familiarity with risk associated with residential populations and campus infrastructure.
  • Ability to obtain the required certification or licenses within a designated timeframe following hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial Safety, or a closely related field.
  • Prior possession of one or more of the following certifications or trainings, or demonstrated experience in equivalent regulatory or operational environments;
    • U. S. Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials (49 CFR 172.700)
    • MA Department of Environmental Protection Hazardous Waste Management (310 CMR 30.341)
    • U. S. OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Response (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(ii)

  • Participation in related professional organizations;
    • Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA)
    • College & University Hazardous Materials Management Conference

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and progressively responsible work experience. Candidates with diverse professional pathways and lived experience are encouraged to apply.
