Scope of the Job:
The Production Technician – Optical Alignment performs highly precise optical alignment, fiber coupling, assembly, and laser welding operations used in the manufacturing of photonic and microelectronic devices. This hands-on position requires excellent hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, patience, and close attention to detail.
The Production Technician will work with small optical and electronic components, follow technical documentation and controlled manufacturing procedures, and develop proficiency in specialized alignment and assembly processes through hands-on training and mentorship. This role works closely with Engineering and experienced technicians to support production, troubleshoot manufacturing issues, and improve manufacturing processes and capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform precision lens alignment, optical alignment, and fiber coupling involving fibers, lenses, lasers, photodiodes, and other photonic components.
- Set up and operate computerized optical alignment equipment, motion-control systems, vision systems, and related manufacturing equipment.
- Operate laser welding equipment to secure aligned optical components.
- Conduct optical measurements and testing to verify product quality and performance.
- Handle small optical and electronic components using tweezers, precision tools, fixtures, and specialized equipment.
- Perform fiber-optic preparation activities, including wrapping, cleaving, and stripping.
- Work under a microscope for extended periods while performing detailed assembly and alignment work.
- Follow controlled work instructions, engineering drawings, specifications, and manufacturing procedures.
- Maintain accurate production records and complete required documentation.
- Follow all ESD, cleanroom, health, and safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace in accordance with 6S and cleanroom standards.
- Collaborate with Engineering to troubleshoot manufacturing issues and improve process yield, throughput, and manufacturability.
- Learn and perform specialized optical alignment and assembly processes through hands-on training and mentorship.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, optics, photonics, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience for candidates with a related degree, or 3-5 years of relevant experience for candidates without a degree.
- Experience in photonics, fiber optics, electronics, precision manufacturing, laboratory operations, or a related technical environment.
- Working knowledge of optical alignment processes and the technical fundamentals required to perform precise lens and fiber alignment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and physical dexterity.
- Ability to handle very small components and perform detailed work under a microscope for extended periods.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow detailed work instructions, engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with optical alignment, lens alignment, fiber coupling, or laser welding.
- Familiarity with optical power meters, alignment stations, vision systems, motion-control equipment, or computerized manufacturing and testing equipment.
- Experience in precision optical assembly or photonics manufacturing.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or 6S principles.
- Fluency in Mandarin to support technical training and knowledge transfer.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a cleanroom manufacturing environment and follow applicable gowning, ESD, health, and safety requirements.
- Ability to perform highly detailed work requiring excellent manual dexterity and fine motor control.
- Ability to work under a microscope and maintain focus for extended periods.
- Ability to handle and manipulate small, delicate optical and electronic components.
- Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive precision work while maintaining accuracy and product quality.
