Job Description

Job DescriptionA day in this role

You’ll run CNC lathes in a fast-paced, high-mix production setting where 5+ changeovers per day are the norm. Your focus: plan and group jobs to streamline setups, complete efficient changeovers, and deliver a flawless first piece before releasing the run.

What you’ll do

  • Operate CNC turning equipment in a high-volume, high-mix environment (expect 5 or more daily changeovers).
  • Analyze the queue, group similar work, and minimize setup time to maximize workflow and machine utilization.
  • Perform rapid, accurate machine setups and verify readiness before production begins.
  • Execute first-piece inspections using visual checks and hand metrology tools including Vernier calipers, micrometers, and drop dial indicators.
  • Partner closely with your Supervisor and Application Engineering/Programming to communicate observations and implement process improvements.
  • Mount, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Pause machines to remove completed parts or to change tooling, adjust setups, and reposition workpieces per the required machining sequence.
  • Transfer programs from servers to CNC controllers via network links and confirm the correct revision is active.
  • Monitor cutting fluids and lubrication to ensure parts are properly cooled and lubricated during operations.
  • Interpret blueprints and program specs to set operations, sequences, and finished dimensions, including numerical control sequences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you need

  • Some CNC programming experience.
  • Competence with basic math (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions; clear basic verbal communication.
  • Capability to lift, push, pull, and position components up to 50 lbs.
  • Stamina to stand for an entire 8–10 hour shift.
  • Team-oriented mindset and dependable work habits.

Education & experience

  • 3+ years in a machine shop, or 1+ year with a vocational school background.
  • Familiarity with basic machining practices and materials is a plus; general mechanical aptitude is beneficial.
