Job Description

Job DescriptionVacuum & Pneumatic Systems Build Technician (Semiconductor Tools)

Picture this: you’re part of a team at Applied Materials in Gloucester, MA, where a strong Varian Semiconductor legacy drives innovation. Your work assembling and testing electro‑mechanical, vacuum, and pneumatic systems helps produce the equipment behind next‑gen chips for consumer electronics. This opportunity starts as an 18‑month contract with a real chance to transition to a permanent role.

Your impact

From first build to final test, you transform drawings and parts lists into production‑ready subassemblies and complete systems. You’ll put your hands on tools, your eyes on schematics, and your mind on troubleshooting—ensuring every deliverable is safe, clean, and accurate. You’ll also contribute to a culture that values engineering growth, intersecting with supply chain and mechanical engineering programs located on site.

Core responsibilities

  • Assemble mechanical, electrical/electronic, and electro‑mechanical components into subassemblies and full units using hand/power tools, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Interpret and execute routine work orders, schematics, wiring diagrams, and parts/wire lists for build, test, and repair activities.
  • With support, perform troubleshooting and repairs; identify errors and implement corrections.
  • Operate, under supervision, test fixtures, electronic measurement instruments, leak detectors, and vacuum pumps to verify performance.
  • Maintain digital records of progress, expenses, and labor; occasionally assist with software installs, light programming, or basic repairs.
  • Uphold safety standards: complete training, wear required PPE, follow procedures, and help keep the environment secure, clean, and healthy.
  • Document finished work, receive and audit parts, inspect for defects, and recommend process improvements.

What you bring

  • 1–2 years of manufacturing experience (non‑semiconductor experience fits well).
  • Computer literacy for data entry and workflow tracking.
  • Skill with hand tools, power tools, jigs, fixtures, and general shop equipment.
  • Ability to read and apply blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Comfort with a physically active role—expect roughly 85% standing or walking.
  • Proficiency in equipment troubleshooting and sound diagnostic judgment.

Compensation and shifts

  • Base pay: $23.00–$25.00 per hour.
  • First Shift: 5:30 am–4:00 pm, Monday–Thursday.
  • Second Shift: 3:45 am–2:15 pm, Monday–Thursday, with a 10% per‑hour differential.
  • Third Shift: 7:30 pm–6:00 am, Monday–Thursday, with a 13% per‑hour differential.
  • Fourth Shift: Friday–Sunday, 6:00 am–6:30 pm, with an 11% per‑hour differential.

Estimated Min Rate: $23.00

Estimated Max Rate: $25.00
