The Safety Intern supports the project safety team in promoting a strong safety culture across active construction sites. This hands-on internship provides exposure to heavy civil and water/wastewater construction operations while developing foundational knowledge of OSHA standards, site safety practices, and real-world risk mitigation. The intern will work closely with the Safety Teams, Project Teams, and Field Leadership to support daily safety activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
This internship is designed as a learning-focused, mentorship-driven experience for students pursuing careers in safety, construction management, engineering, or related fields.
Field Safety Support
- Assist with daily site safety walks and hazard identification.
- Support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Pre-Task Plans
- Observe and help reinforce safe work practices in the field.
- Participate in incident investigations and near-miss reporting (under supervision)
Training & Compliance
- Support safety orientations for new hires, visitors, and subcontractors.
- Assist with tracking safety training, certifications, and sign-in documentation.
- Help maintain OSHA, EM-385, and project-specific safety documentation.
- Support compliance with client, regulatory, and company safety requirements.
Safety Meetings & Communication
- Assist with preparation and delivery of toolbox talks and safety stand-downs.
- Help post safety signage, notices, and updates throughout the jobsite.
- Participate in weekly safety meetings with project leadership.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain safety logs, inspection forms, and corrective action tracking.
- Assist with audit preparation and follow-up documentation.
- Enter safety data into company systems as required.
Professional Development
- Shadow Safety Coordinators, Site Safety Managers, and Superintendents
- Gain exposure to heavy equipment operations, confined space, excavation, concrete, and utility work.
- Participate in mentorship check-ins and internship development activities.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a program in:
- Safety Management
- Construction Management
- Engineering
- Industrial Hygiene
- or a related field
- Strong interest in construction safety and field operations.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather and active construction environments.
- Willingness to travel to project sites assigned.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 10 (Construction) or OSHA 30 (preferred; training may be provided).
- Prior construction, field, or safety-related experience.
- Familiarity with heavy civil construction environments.
- Strong communication and observational skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk in uneven terrain, climb ladders, and access active construction areas.
- Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, and boots.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. as needed.
