Job DescriptionPosition Overview / Department Overview:
The ECMO Specialist is actively engaged in our department's ECMO Training Program. This position entails acquiring and honing the necessary skills to effectively and safely implement, oversee, and manage extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology, as well as assist with related procedures for critically ill patients across all age groups. Under the guidance of seasoned ECMO professionals, the specialist will learn to troubleshoot devices and related equipment, provide continuous care by monitoring clinical and physiological parameters, adjust ECLS devices as required, administer and document blood products and medications in line with hospital protocols, manage airways and ventilators, and fulfill the complete responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist II.
Schedule: 36 hours weekly, with rotating day and night shifts, including every third weekend.
**This role qualifies for full-time benefits and includes a $20,000 sign-on bonus (not applicable to internal candidates or former employees who have worked here in the last two years).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist in assembling, preparing, and maintaining extracorporeal circuits and related equipment.
- Support the priming of extracorporeal circuits and the preparation of systems for clinical use.
- Help with cannulation procedures.
- Contribute to the establishment of extracorporeal support; monitor patient reactions, conduct routine assessments, evaluate circuits, and manage anticoagulation.
- Assist with ECMO circuit interventions, weaning processes, and patient transports.
- Administer blood products in accordance with hospital standards.
- Communicate effectively with caregivers, nursing staff, surgical and medical teams, patients, and their families.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation in the patient's electronic health record.
- Engage in professional development, simulation training, and continuing education.
- Regularly attend ECMO Team meetings and Morbidity & Mortality conferences.
Essential Qualifications:
- Education:
- Required: Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy
- Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience:
- Required: At least one year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist with eligibility for promotion to RT II, or one year of external ECMO experience.
- Preferred: None specified
- Licensure / Certifications:
- Required: Current Massachusetts license as a Respiratory Therapist
- Required: Current credential from the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT); Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS) credential must be obtained within six months of starting the role.
