Owner/editor of a consistently profitable newsletter is seeking to hire a full-time business journalist to write in-depth news articles for sophisticated readers in a niche market. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in writing complex stories requiring meticulous research and first-person reporting.
This is an opportunity for someone to rapidly advance to the position of chief editor of a successful publication with benefits and an above-market salary. The ideal candidate would have the ability to work one week per month at our two-person office in Peterborough, NH.
The newsletter, Public Works Financing (PWF), has been published monthly since 1988. It has a loyal following among the worlds largest contractors, engineers, bankers and consultants, as well as executive-level decision-makers in government. Also subscribing are academics, think tanks, policy experts and others who are seeking ways to improve how large public works projects are procured, constructed and maintained.
It is a sophisticated audience, many of whom have been subscribers for 10+ years. The majority of our 32 advertisers also have renewed consistently, some for over 20 years. Specifically, the subject matter is public-private partnerships (PPP) in the development and operation of large infrastructure projects in the U.S., Canada and internationally. PWF is distributed as a traditional print publication with minimal art as well as a pdf that is emailed to readers. There is no on-line version.
~ Meet deadlines.
~ Work closely with the editor to ensure accuracy, timeliness.
~ Quickly learn to initiate, report, and write hard
news on U.S. projects, legislation, company news, market trends.
~ Establish relationships and trust with news sources.
~ Occasional travel: Attend industry meetings, legislative hearings, call on industry leaders etc.
~ Participate in editorial research and the planning of monthly issues.
~ Become familiar with an extensive archive of PWF news, industry op ed commentary and case studies of PPP projects.
~ Have the ability/willingness to assume ownership responsibilities.
~ Three years of newspaper/magazine/on-line reporting and writing on business news.
~ Four-year college degree.
~ Knowledge of construction, public works procurement is helpful.
~ Knowledge of infrastructure finance is helpful.
~ Trade group/ advocacy journalism experience is not pertinent.
~ Public relations/communications/marketing experience is not pertinent.
