Position Title: Agricultural Technician (Research)
Salary Range: Range – 8 - $34,075 - $54,433
Personnel Status: Nonexempt, Full-time, Regular
Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Farm Manager, provides assistance to the daily operation of the UMES farms; assists researchers with field research being conducted in plant and soil science at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore‘s Agricultural Experiment Station; assists with all farm operations including field preparation, planting, cultivating, spraying, harvesting, and supporting multiple research projects; and repairs equipment as needed so that farm operations and research continues successfully. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: High school diploma or GED required with three years in agricultural work in which one year was in agricultural research required. Valid driver’s license required. Preferred qualifications: A.S. or A.A. degree with three to five years of Agriculture Research experience, State of Maryland Pesticide Public Agency Applicator Certificate, Nutrient Management Applicator Voucher, or ability to obtain both within six (6) months, and a Commercial CDL Class B Driver’s License. Must have the ability to manage and operate research projects; to collect, process samples and tabulate research data; to use and troubleshoot farm equipment; to lift 50 pounds; and to program research instruments, download data from data loggers and maintain data transmission equipment or be willing to acquire those skills through training. Must have a strong commitment to research and be a self-starter. Ability to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools and equipment to climb and perform extensive standing and walking required. Ability to wear ad work in personal protective equipment and to work in extreme weather conditions required. Must have good communication and interpersonal skills; be able to work collaboratively in a diverse workplace; and have the capacity to balance multiple projects at a time.
